Profile Page
For those of you who are curious as to who I am (although chances are, if you’re just looking for pics of hot chicks, you ain’t), my name is Royston Mark Joseph. I was born on the 11
th
of May 1981, so you can do the math to figure out just how old I am from when you first visited this site. I’m of West Indian decent (aka Black), and was born in the
UK
.
I’ve always loved cartoons. They were the one thing I had to look forward to in such a miserable childhood. It was just me, my mum and my younger brother. My mum was always fast asleep on Saturday mornings, so me and my bro would always get up early to watch Saturday morning cartoons.
Looney Toons
,
He-Man
,
Thundercats
,
Transformers
,
Ninja Turtles
,
Batman
,
Spiderman
, you name it, we watched it.
I would always draw these characters because they fired up my imagination. I often got comics as well, but I could never collect them coz we never had that much money to spend on anything.
The kids at school thought my drawings were so cool they all wanted a copy, but we didn’t have access to a photocopier so I had to draw each copy by hand! Drawing the same character over and over again quickly became boring though.
As I got older, the passion to draw slowly waned. I spent most of my time playing video games, so it became harder and harder to motivate myself to draw (I still have that problem!). Then something changed, something that brought me back to those days of being in awe and amazement of something that was beyond mere cartoons. That thing was JAPANESE ANIMATION!
Shows such as
Dragonball Z
,
Gundam Wing
and
Ghost in the Shell
got me fired up for drawing again, showing intense and dynamic characters and mechs, I had discovered a whole new direction for me to take and more importantly, someday I might be able to make money for doing something I enjoy!
Most of the courses or lessons I’ve ever attended after that had been art based. I desperately tried to find out as much as I could about
Japan
, anime and Manga. Ironically, I’m pretty much self taught in terms of drawing skill. Most of the art teachers I’ve ever had never really understood my style, and always tried to steer me to try different art styles, something I wasn’t particularly pleased about. When the “How to draw Manga” books came out, I was elated, finally having some source material to really study from and develop my style from.
Unfortunately, there currently wasn’t much interest in Anime and Manga in the
UK
at the time, and the comic book industry in
UK
isn’t as big as it is in the
US
or
Japan
(but that IS slowly changing), so I had to be more realistic in my expectations. I’ve fallen into an interest with computers, which has given me great avenues to transfer my interests and talents to. Programs like Adobe Photoshop and Macromedia Flash have given me greater opportunities to experiment with creating art and animation from the comfort of my own home. As far as I’m concerned, I’ve never been in a better position to show the world what I’m capable of, that is of course if I can find enough free time to put something together AND motivate my lazy ass long enough to do so!
Well, that’s me in a nutshell, If you want a more detailed description of my past, then you can follow
